Naturally Plastered offer our clients an efficient and effective insulation solution in the form of insulated lime plasters. We have utilised insulated lime plaster and its benefits during many projects in the Shropshire area which have made a real difference to customers homes, not only making them look better but feel warmer too.
Insulating Lime Plasters
It is important to remember that older properties are often solid walled, meaning there is no cavity to act as a buffer, as well as no insulation provided by any insulation in the cavity. This means that careful consideration should be given when looking to insulate a solid walled property. Air tightness, vapour permeability, thermal bridging as well as ensuring no damp will be caused are key things to think about.

What are Insulating Lime Plasters?
Due to advancements in technology, there now exists several NHL (Natural Hydraulic Lime) lime based plaster products which contain low density specialist aggregates to create a breathable insulating plaster coat, which not only makes your walls warmer but also acts as a de-humidifier for your solid walls. These plasters usually contain recycled glass beads which add bulk and insulation to the plaster.

Benefits of Insulating Lime Plasters
Quicker: NHL's set much faster as they cure through hydrolysis (involvement of water) instead of carbonation like Non Hydraulic Lime plaster mixes.
Build up Quicker: Most insulating lime plasters allow you to apply thick coats of up to 30mm thick in a single pass, as opposed to only 8-12mm in traditional lime putty plasters (non-hydraulic limes)
Behaves just as a normal NHL2 plaster: allowing your walls to breathe and not trap moisture.
Less space taken up: allows you to keep the impact on space to a minimum, as opposed to thicker options such as Wood Fibre Board Insulation.
Highly insulating: just a 25mm coat alone improves a wall's U-Value by 40%, and a 50mm layer improving the value by 60%.
Less Risk: Insulating lime plasters will not damage the fabric of your building and as they contain only natural aggregates there is no fear of the material breaking down or rotting over time.

What do you put over insulating lime plaster?
Once the insulating lime plaster has been applied at the desired thickness, it can be finished almost immediately (usually within a day or two) with a fine skim layer of traditional lime putty (non hydraulic lime plaster) such as CLM66 from Cornish Lime. This allows you to have a finer finish suitable for decorating (or you may just like the finish of the plaster!)
